Being able to find the right type of support for ADD and ADHD is essential in learning to perform at your best. Seeking out the help of qualified professionals as well as identifying personal mentors will make a huge difference.

One of the biggest hurdles I had to overcome with my ADHD was admitting that I had ADHD. It used to be a source of embarrassment for me and I always believed I could overcome anything by trying harder than everyone else. While I am not discounting the idea of hard work, I will tell you that if you work at something hard and are not good at it, it will only make things worse. I struggled with personal and professional problems because I was working hard but not well.

Around ten years ago or so, I decided it was time to take matters into my own hands. The status quo I was following was like being stuck in the mud. Instead of continuing to struggle, I decided it was time for a change. This was the biggest hurdle for me and can often be the biggest hurdle for my clients. Admitting there’s a problem and working on improving it are challenging.

Many of my clients are told to work harder, stop being lazy, take things seriously and get their act together. In reality, this is like being told to swallow a large steak without cutting into smaller and more manageable pieces. You wouldn’t eat a steak in one swallow and you cannot fix a bigger problem with just words. It takes the help of others…

After seeking professional help as well as meeting with different support groups, I found there were others that dealt with similar concerns, and that I was not alone in my struggles. This really helped me see that there was light at the end of the tunnel and begin down the road to success.

My advice to anyone with similar concerns is get involved with your ADD and ADHD. Get to know yourself, seek out the help of qualified professionals and work better not harder. You will begin to see differences.
