Handling a Horrible Mistake with ADD & ADHD

Many of us folks with ADD and ADHD have a tendency of having those whoops moments. We’ll say or do something that we later regret. Those around us that know and love us have an ability to understand why we react in certain ways. But what about something that is way more over the line? A point when we’ve made a horrible and life-changing decision. How should we handle that type of situation? I was just introduced to a client that made that type of decision. Without going into detail, the individual did something that got the individual into major problems across more than one area of that person’s life. The family approached me about helping this individual work through this decision as well as planning the next steps to the process. Here’s our plan of action…

The first and most important thing we all have to do is not panic. Even the most horrific events are not helped by losing control. Just when everything seems lost, there’s always a way to work through the issue. Obviously there’s exceptions to this, but for 95% of events there’s a way to solve the problem. After putting the events into perspective, a plan needs to be formulated. It’s important that decisions aren’t made during a stressful moment, but after taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve seen families overreact to a situation. This complicates the whole process. Being in control is the most important part of this whole process. One just cannot give up control by overreacting.

I would also advise that one does not enter this process alone. Seeking the help of a qualified professional is key. Here’s a list of different types of professionals (click here). Finding the right person that fits your needs also helps with the tough decisions. A qualified professional will be able to guide you down the right path towards success.

I will repeat myself…YOU NEED TO STAY IN CONTROL!!! If you do this and seek the appropriate help, this process will be less difficult.
