Many individuals with ADD, ADHD and Executive Functioning concerns miss many subtle and not-so-subtle moments of life. In classrooms, many pieces of valuable information can be missed. One of the strategies I recommend to clients is to…study the teacher.
What does this exactly mean? Well, teachers are creatures of habit. They will normally follow similar patterns with tests, quizzes and even when they grade a test. On larger assignments, there are things that a teacher may seek out as well. I suggest to my school-aged clients to not only learn these things from observation, but reach out and talk with other students that have had the teacher in the past. If the teacher is new, spend a few minutes to get to know the teacher. The more interest one shows in a teacher, the more the teacher will want to help the student be successful.
If possible, save as many evaluation materials as possible. Use these to not only review, but look for and understand patterns. This is an excellent way to prepare for the type of information that will be requested. Just because a test may have differing questions does not mean one cannot learn from the test.
The key to all of this is for a student to become a student of education, not just the curriculum.
